"The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" | Movie Title Design

The movie "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" is a comedy/adventure film about a man whose life is monotonous and ordinary. He works as a negative asset manager, filing film photos for a magazine company that is leaving him behind in favor of new technologies. Often quietly overlooked by the world, Walter has daydreams of fantastical events. More and more, Walter imagines doing something courageous or heroic to escape his normal life.

The animation follows the main plot points from the movie. Objects that play an important role in the narrative are highlighted along with a significant quote from the movie. The main character at different points throughout the movie rides in a plane, helicopter, boat, and on a bicycle. These modes of transportation govern the types of movement used to transition from one scene to another. The graphic style is a mixture of vectors and photographic textures. Throughout the motion graphic, the colors become more and more vibrant to reflect the main character’s development. Vectors are used for smooth animations and the textures give the feeling of stark reality that plays a part in the storyline.

A Story in Stone | Animated Infographic

Within the layers of rock around the world is evidenceof the mass extinction that occurred at the end of the Cretaceous period and beginning of the Paleogene, some sixty-six million years ago. However, it was only a few years ago that a paleontologist made a discovery of new evidence pointing to the answer. In North Dakota along the Hell Creek formation, a popular site for fossils, paleontologist Robert DePalma uncovered a deposit of fossils unlike any seen before. DePalma named this site Tanis, and within the rock layers was the story of the day the dinosaurs died.

Many paleontologists suspect an asteroid as the main cause of the extinction of 75% of Earth’s species at the end of the Cretaceous. DePalma’s discovery also points to this conclusion. It is likely that a single large impact set off a chain of disasters that destroyed the food chain and brought about rapid change to life on Earth.

Today, scientists are still theorizing about what exactly happened the day of the collision. I planned to approach the information design from a storytelling frame of mind. The narrative and sequence of events was really important to phrase correctly in order for the viewer to follow along with my topic and information. I wanted to use an educational point of view while also creating an engaging and entertaining story for the viewer to follow along with.
